Our Clients

We offer individual counseling and therapy services for adults, aged 18+.

Our clients come to us at all stages of their lives - some are right out of school and learning to navigate the “adult world” for the first time.

Others are dealing with the demands of changing relationships and the pressures of family life. This can include parenting challenges, separation, and divorce.

And some clients are seeking support to cope with care-giving responsibilities and help to move through grief and loss.

Our clients may have spent years struggling to find a way forward. Others may just be realizing the need for change. Regardless, our clients are motivated to grow and heal.

Everyone is warmly welcomed at our practice - regardless of age, gender, ability, or sexual orientation. LGBTQI+ and BIPOC inclusive.

Therapy Modalities We Use

We practice relational psychotherapy, which means the ‘vibe’ or report you have with your therapist is central to the work.

Then we utilize practical, evidence-based approaches to help facilitate change. These include: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and EMDR.

Attachment theory, polyvagal theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and neuroplasticity inform our approach for individual adult therapy.

Our therapists are master’s educated, licensed social workers. We have additional training in therapy modalities that are effective for individual adult therapy. We believe in the potential for growth for our clients, and for our therapists! We regularly participate in continuing education.

What to Expect from Our Sessions

Everyone’s journey to therapy looks a little different, and our clients come to us from a variety of backgrounds - but they all share the same goal: to better understand themselves, gain insight into past experiences, develop skills for today, and build a meaningful, authentic life going forward.

At Relational Creatures Psychotherapy, we believe that effective individual therapy and counseling can be done through a variety of approaches. Our practice leads with relational psychotherapy, in which a client feels comfortable to share thoughts, feelings, and emotions with the ‘right’ therapist for them. The goal of therapy is to help you make meaning of experiences, recognize emotions, and challenge thoughts and behaviors that no longer serve you. Therapy can be helpful for a variety of issues, such as difficult life events and transitions, relationship problems, traumatic experiences, anxiety, and depression. Psychotherapy can also help you to cope with grief, loss, and long-term, chronic physical health problems.

During a typical 1 hour session, your therapist/counselor will listen carefully, ask questions, clarify and reframe experiences, and make observations. We’ll also provide feedback, psycho-education, and skills.

In between our sessions, it can be helpful to reflect on our discussions and pay attention to your experiences, thoughts and feelings. We may recommend practicing skills, suggest exercises, or ask you to make note of your ‘highs and lows.’ All of these are aimed at deepening our work together so that you can get the most out of your therapy sessions.

Whether you opt for in-person or online/virtual therapy sessions, the approach is the same.

Our Therapeutic Style

Our primary goal is to create a comfortable, non-judgmental space where our clients can be open and get the most out of therapy. Our secondary goal is to clearly understand YOUR goals for therapy. We then work together to develop an initial plan, with the understanding that we will revisit this plan as we continue our work.

We value individuality and authenticity. We lead with compassion, humor, and openness. We want our clients to feel comfortable sharing and feeling. That begins with feeling heard and understood by the ‘right’ therapist who knows how to help.

We are naturally curious people, we want to understand YOU. We will listen carefully, and provide support and guidance so that you can gain clarity in your own life. We’ll help you make connections between experiences, thoughts, and emotions. We will also help you develop or strengthen the skills you need to bring about lasting positive change.

We know our clients are the ‘experts’ in their own lives. At the same time, we believe in being honest and direct, we will challenge you when needed. If we think it’s in your best interest, we will ‘call it like we see it’ or bring it to your attention.

Expect your therapy sessions to be personal, collaborative, growth-oriented, and creative. We do not believe in a cookie cutter approach and instead tailor sessions to the individual and your goals for therapy.

Therapy can help you…

Experience and understand your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.

Our emotions are indicators of how we’re experiencing our lives, but we may ignore, suppress, or deny them. Together we will work to notice and name your emotions. We’ll draw connections between emotions and your thoughts and behaviors.

Improve relationships with the important people in your life.

The quality of our relationships correlates to the quality of our lives. We will take time to consider relationship dynamics and patterns with partners, family, and friends, at work and in your community.

Navigate challenging times and find a new way forward.

Our lives have peaks and valleys. Sometimes we need a little extra support, therapy can often be that support. Our sessions offer time to feel, and space to process and make meaning of the tough stuff.

Gain perspective and build a life authentic to you.

We share basic needs for connection and security. You’re also an individual, with unique and interesting perspectives. We’re curious about what makes you ‘YOU’! And we’ll support you in creating and developing a life in line with your values and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We provide personalized therapy for adults from diverse backgrounds, at many stages of life. Everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, is warmly welcomed. LGBTQI+ and BIPOC inclusive.

Psychotherapy can help with many issues and diagnoses, provided you are ready to do the work.

Please note, our services are not appropriate for anyone in immediate crisis. If you believe you or someone you care for needs immediate care, call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.

  • No referral necessary! During our consultation call we will ask about how you found our practice. If you decide to continue with us for therapy, we will also want to know about your other care providers and any previous experiences with psychotherapy. This will be part of our initial assessment.

  • There are many considerations when determining the number of therapy sessions. We will work with you to determine needs, goals, and treatment expectations.

We generally see clients weekly or biweekly, depending on needs.

  • Most sessions will be 60 minutes. Our initial session will be a little longer, about 75 minutes, to allow us time to cover the basics and start to clarify issues and goals.

Occasionally, shorter or longer sessions are necessary. These will be prorated. You can discuss this with your therapist, as the need arises.

  • Therapy is most effective when you are open and curious about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and are willing to try out new ways of thinking and behaving.

Growth and healing are our focus. Therapy offers proven interventions to support you in achieving the goal of long-term change. Like most things in life, the effort you put in directly impacts the outcome. It's also important to use the right interventions, and we will work together to ensure that you are receiving the right support for you.

  • In most cases, the answer is yes! We want you to have the right therapist for you. We will discuss scheduling and availability during the 15 minute consultation call. Sometimes we will suggest a particular therapist to best meet your needs.

  • During your first few sessions, your therapist will assess your needs and goals. This is when we really start to understand you, your history, and how you relate to your world. After 2 or 3 sessions, your therapist will have some initial impressions of what the work will entail. If you agree with the plan, we'll continue meeting, usually weekly or biweekly. Therapy may require a significant commitment of time, money, and energy, so it's important to carefully consider the therapist you choose.

  • We do not accept any insurance. We offer receipts, called superbills, for you to submit to your insurance company if you are eligible for Out Of Network (OON) benefits. Superbills contain all the information insurance companies typically request for reimbursement.

You will need to request receipts for reimbursement. You are responsible for managing reimbursement and any insurance policy changes that may impact reimbursement.

In order for us to set realistic treatment goals and priorities, it is important to evaluate what resources you have available to pay for your treatment. If you have a health insurance policy, it will often provide reimbursement for out of network providers. We will provide you with whatever assistance we can in helping you receive the benefits to which you are entitled; however, you are responsible for submitting superbills for reimbursement.

  • For each psychotherapy session, our private pay fee is $180-$200, for a 55-minute individual session. The initial 75 minute session is $225.

Please note that our fees are subject to yearly increases, and any changes will be communicated to you in advance to allow for proper planning. Payment is expected at the time of each session unless we have made alternative arrangements. Self-pay clients will receive a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) before starting treatment. The GFE provides an estimate of the costs that private pay clients may incur during the agreed-upon time frame for treatment.

Payment will be processed by Stripe, and credit card information and authorization will be requested with the intake forms. We will send these to you to be completed prior to our initial session. We accept major credit cards, HSA/FSA cards, Venmo, and cash.

An initial evaluation typically lasts 2 to 4 sessions. During this period, we can determine whether we are the best fit to help you achieve your goals. If we agree to continue, we will generally schedule one 55-60 minute session per week or every other week at a time that works for both you and your therapist.

We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. After scheduling an appointment, you are expected to cover the full cost of the session, unless you cancel with at least 24 hours notice.

  • Our therapists are licensed to practice in New Jersey, so we only work with clients who are in the state at time of our sessions.

That means you can see us in our Marlton offices, or if you opt for online sessions, you are required to be in New Jersey at the time of our sessions.
