Families

Every family has its own unique dynamics, strengths, and challenges. As family members grow and change, it’s natural for communication to break down, conflict to arise, or relationships to feel strained. Therapy offers an opportunity to better understand one another, work through challenges together, and build stronger, more connected relationships.

At Relational Creatures, we offer a supportive, judgment-free space to explore personal experiences, navigate challenges, and strengthen relationships. Sessions may focus on you as an individual, with family members welcome to join when it feels helpful and supportive.

Signs you may benefit from support

Family relationships can be a source of connection and support, but they can also bring challenges that feel difficult to navigate. You may benefit from support if you find yourself:

  • Feeling misunderstood or struggling to communicate openly with family members

  • Navigating recurring conflict or tension in family relationships

  • Adjusting to changes in family dynamics, parenting, or life transitions

  • Finding it difficult to establish boundaries while maintaining connection

  • Feeling overwhelmed by family responsibilities or the emotional needs of others

  • Wanting to better understand your role in family dynamics and the patterns that shape your relationships

You don't need to be experiencing a major challenge to seek support. Sometimes, having space to reflect on your experiences, better understand your needs, and explore new ways of relating can make a meaningful difference.

Beginning therapy with Relational Creatures Psychotherapy is easy and requires no referral. You can book a complimentary consultation call here.

Your initial session will be 75-90 minutes long. During this first appointment, your therapist will ask questions to better understand you and your areas of struggle. This is known as an initial assessment. The assessment phase can last anywhere from 1-3 appointments, and it is critical. It helps the therapist understand your goals and develop a treatment plan to support you in achieving them.

After the assessment is complete, treatment begins!

In the treatment phase, you will be introduced to a variety of skills to practice and implement to better manage your symptoms. Most people will have a therapy session every 1-2 weeks, and we recommend this cadence for optimal treatment. Effective therapy typically takes somewhere between six to twelve appointments (for some more, others less).

Many choose to continue therapy once formal treatment is complete. This is referred to as maintenance. People who do this typically have an appointment once every 6-8 weeks. This is not a requirement and is a matter of personal choice.

Your first appointment will be 75-90 minutes long. Subsequent appointments are generally 1 hour or 90 minutes.

What does therapy offer?

Therapy offers a space to explore your experiences, better understand the dynamics that shape your relationships, and find new ways to navigate challenges. Whether you're seeking support for yourself, looking for guidance as a parent, or hoping to strengthen your relationships with family members, therapy can be tailored to your needs. Together, we can work to:

Build self-awareness: Better understand your emotions, needs, and the patterns that influence how you relate to others.

Improve communication within family unit: Explore ways to express yourself, navigate difficult conversations, and feel more understood.

Navigate change and life transitions: Process transitions and adjust to changes in family relationships and circumstances.

Establish healthy boundaries: Find ways to honour your own needs while maintaining meaningful connections with others.

Strengthen relationships: Develop greater understanding, compassion, and connection within your family.

Build confidence: Identify your strengths and develop practical ways to approach challenges with greater clarity.

At Relational Creatures, we recognize that every family is different. Our approach is grounded in curiosity, compassion, and respect for each person's individual experiences. Sessions can focus on you and your own goals, with family members welcome to participate when it feels helpful and appropriate.
