Healthcare Professionals
Having a career in healthcare can be deeply meaningful, but it also comes with unique emotional demands. Navigating high-pressure environments, supporting patients through difficult experiences, and balancing work with your personal life can take a toll over time. Therapy offers space to process your experiences, explore your needs, and find ways to care for yourself while caring for others.
At Relational Creatures, we offer a supportive, judgment-free space for healthcare professionals to explore their experiences, navigate the emotional demands of their work, and develop skills for managing stress both on and off the job.
Common challenges healtcare professionals face
Your work comes with intense and unique stressors that may be difficult to put into words. Peer support from colleagues can help, but you may also benefit from seeking professional guidance. Here are some common challenges that may come up in therapy:
Compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma: Repeated exposure to illness, suffering, and loss can take an emotional toll over time. Compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma may contribute to emotional exhaustion, detachment, difficulty connecting with others, or feeling less affected by experiences that once felt meaningful.
Emotional suppression and regulation: Healthcare professionals are often expected to remain calm and composed, even in emotionally intense situations. Over time, consistently setting aside personal feelings to meet professional demands can make it difficult to process emotions, recognize personal needs, or decompress outside of work.
Work-life balance and relationship stress: Irregular schedules, long hours, and the emotional weight of patient care can affect relationships and personal well-being. It may be difficult to transition out of work mode, be emotionally present with loved ones, or make time for needs outside of the healthcare role.
Moral distress and professional guilt: Healthcare professionals may face situations where limited resources, workplace policies, or competing priorities make it difficult to provide the care they believe patients deserve. These experiences can contribute to guilt, frustration, helplessness, and questions about professional values.
Beginning therapy with Relational Creatures Psychotherapy is easy and requires no referral. You can book a complimentary consultation call here.
Your initial session will be 75-90 minutes long. During this first appointment, your therapist will ask questions to better understand you and your areas of struggle. This is known as an initial assessment. The assessment phase can last anywhere from 1-3 appointments, and it is critical. It helps the therapist understand your goals and develop a treatment plan to support you in achieving them.
After the assessment is complete, treatment begins!
In the treatment phase, you will be introduced to a variety of skills to practice and implement to better manage your symptoms. Most people will have a therapy session every 1-2 weeks, and we recommend this cadence for optimal treatment. Effective therapy typically takes somewhere between six to twelve appointments (for some more, others less).
Many choose to continue therapy once formal treatment is complete. This is referred to as maintenance. People who do this typically have an appointment once every 6-8 weeks. This is not a requirement and is a matter of personal choice.
Your first appointment will be 75-90 minutes long. Subsequent appointments are generally 1 hour or 90 minutes.
What does therapy offer?
Working as a healtcare professional can bring unique challenges that affect emotional well-being, relationships, and life outside of work. Therapy offers healthcare professionals a space to process the demands of their work, reconnect with themselves, and explore ways to support their well-being both inside and outside the workplace. Therapy can help you:
Process difficult experiences and emotional demands: Make space for the emotional impact of patient care, loss, and high-pressure situations.
Manage stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue: Recognize signs of emotional exhaustion and develop strategies to navigate ongoing professional demands.
Strengthen relationships and personal boundaries: Explore communication patterns, establish boundaries, and make room for meaningful connections outside of work.
Reconnect with identity and personal well-being: Explore who you are beyond your professional role and build a healthier balance between caring for others and caring for yourself.
We embrace a multidisciplinary approach that may include several components, including cognitive behavioural therapy, EMDR, acceptance and commitment therapy, polyvagal-informed therapy, and more.
