LGTBQIA+
Navigating identity, relationships, and the world around you can be both incredibly meaningful and challenging. Whether you’re exploring your identity, navigating relationships, or processing experiences of discrimination or misunderstanding, therapy offers space to feel seen, understood, and supported.
At Relational Creatures, we offer an affirming, judgment-free space for LGBTQIA+ folks to feel supported through navigating challenges associated with mental health, gender identity and expression, family conflict, social isolation, and acceptance.
What does LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy offer?
People seek therapy for many reasons, whether they're feeling stuck, navigating difficult emotions, or hoping to build more fulfilling relationships. For LGBTQIA+ individuals, these experiences can be further complicated by discrimination, bullying, family rejection, and other forms of trauma. Therapy recognizes these additional challenges and offers a supportive space where your experiences are heard and respected.
Whether you're exploring your identity or looking for support in navigating everyday life, therapy meets you where you are. If you're questioning or exploring your identity, therapy can help you better understand and embrace your gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and romantic or sexual attraction.
If you're already secure in your identity, therapy can still offer a space to process difficult experiences, strengthen self-esteem, navigate mental health concerns, and build meaningful, supportive relationships.
Beginning therapy with Relational Creatures Psychotherapy is easy and requires no referral. You can book a complimentary consultation call here.
Your initial session will be 75-90 minutes long. During this first appointment, your therapist will ask questions to better understand you and your areas of struggle. This is known as an initial assessment. The assessment phase can last anywhere from 1-3 appointments, and it is critical. It helps the therapist understand your goals and develop a treatment plan to support you in achieving them.
After the assessment is complete, treatment begins!
In the treatment phase, you will be introduced to a variety of skills to practice and implement to better manage your symptoms. Most people will have a therapy session every 1-2 weeks, and we recommend this cadence for optimal treatment. Effective therapy typically takes somewhere between six to twelve appointments (for some more, others less).
Many choose to continue therapy once formal treatment is complete. This is referred to as maintenance. People who do this typically have an appointment once every 6-8 weeks. This is not a requirement and is a matter of personal choice.
Your first appointment will be 75-90 minutes long. Subsequent appointments are generally 1 hour or 90 minutes.
Common issues to work on in therapy
Everyone’s experiences are unique, and therapy should reflect that. Wherever you are in your journey, we will meet you there. Here are some of the common concerns we work on with LGBTQIA+ folks.
Identity and internal conflict: Exploring your identity can bring up complicated feelings, particularly when personal experiences intersect with societal expectations, discrimination, or family rejection. Therapy offers space to process these experiences and develop greater self-acceptance.
Anxiety, depression, and emotional well-being: Experiences of stigma, rejection, and discrimination can contribute to anxiety, low mood, and emotional overwhelm. Therapy can help you develop coping strategies, process difficult experiences, and feel more grounded and connected.
Dating and relationships: Navigating dating, intimacy, and relationships can bring unique challenges around communication, trust, boundaries, and belonging. Therapy can help you understand relationship patterns and build connections that feel safe and fulfilling.
Family, community, and belonging: Whether you're navigating coming out, family conflict, or feelings of isolation, finding a sense of belonging can be an important part of well-being. Therapy can help you explore these relationships and build a support system that honors who you are.
Trauma and difficult experiences: Experiences of discrimination, bullying, rejection, or violence can have lasting effects on your sense of safety, self-worth, and relationships. Therapy offers a supportive space to process these experiences at your own pace, understand how they continue to affect you, and develop a greater sense of safety and connection.
