Parents and Caregivers

Parenting can be deeply rewarding, but it comes with its unique challenges. Between navigating your child’s emotions, managing daily responsibilities, and balancing your own needs, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or unsure of how best to support your family. Whether you’re working through a specific challenge or simply looking to strengthen your relationship with your child, therapy can offer space to reflect, build confidence, and create healthy patterns.

At Relational Creatures, we offer a supportive, judgment-free space where parents can explore their experiences, better understand family dynamics, and develop tools to navigate the ups and downs of caregiving.

What is parent counseling?

Parent counselling focuses on helping parents understand their child's development and build stronger emotional bonds within the home. Sessions are typically attended by parents without their child present, allowing space to reflect openly on your difficulties and what you would like to see change. Together, we can help you to:

  • Better understand your child’s needs and behaviors.

  • Navigate challenging emotions and family dynamics.

  • Strengthen communication and connection.

  • Develop strategies for navigating conflict and setting boundaries.

  • Explore your own upbringing and how it shapes your parenting today.

  • Balance your own needs with the demands of caregiving.

We welcome children to join sessions whenever it feels helpful and appropriate for everyone involved.

Beginning therapy with Relational Creatures Psychotherapy is easy and requires no referral. You can book a complimentary consultation call here.

Your initial session will be 75-90 minutes long. During this first appointment, your therapist will ask questions to better understand you and your areas of struggle. This is known as an initial assessment. The assessment phase can last anywhere from 1-3 appointments, and it is critical. It helps the therapist understand your goals and develop a treatment plan to support you in achieving them.

After the assessment is complete, treatment begins!

In the treatment phase, you will be introduced to a variety of skills to practice and implement to better manage your symptoms. Most people will have a therapy session every 1-2 weeks, and we recommend this cadence for optimal treatment. Effective therapy typically takes somewhere between six to twelve appointments (for some more, others less).

Many choose to continue therapy once formal treatment is complete. This is referred to as maintenance. People who do this typically have an appointment once every 6-8 weeks. This is not a requirement and is a matter of personal choice.

Your first appointment will be 75-90 minutes long. Subsequent appointments are generally 1 hour or 90 minutes.

When to consider parent counseling

Parenting doesn’t come with a universal roadmap, and it’s natural to feel overwhelmed or unsure of yourself at times. Every child has their own strengths, needs, and challenges, which means finding the right approach often takes patience, flexibility, and a willingness to learn along the way. Parent counseling offers a supportive space to explore these challenges, gain professional guidance, and develop strategies that work for you and your family. You might consider therapy if you’re experiencing:

Ongoing conflict with your child: Frequent arguments, power struggles, or difficulty communicating can leave everyone feeling frustrated or disconnected. Therapy can help you better understand what's contributing to these dynamics and find ways to approach conflict with greater clarity and connection.

Difficulty understanding your child's emotions or behaviors: When your child is experiencing big emotions, withdrawing, or acting in ways that are difficult to understand, it can be hard to know how to respond. Therapy can help you explore what might be underlying these behaviors and identify supportive ways to meet your child's needs.

Feeling overwhelmed or unsure of yourself: Parenting can bring up self-doubt, guilt, and the feeling that you're never doing enough. If you're questioning your decisions or struggling to balance your own needs with your child's, therapy can help you build confidence in your parenting approach.

Navigating developmental changes or transitions: Changes such as starting school, entering adolescence, adjusting to a separation, or welcoming a new family member can affect the entire family. Counseling can help you anticipate challenges, adapt to changing needs, and support your child through periods of transition.

Recognizing patterns from your own childhood: Our experiences growing up can shape how we respond to our children, particularly during moments of stress. If you notice yourself repeating patterns from your family of origin or reacting in ways that don't align with the parent you want to be, therapy can help you understand these responses and explore new possibilities.

Wanting to strengthen your relationship with your child: You don't have to wait until something feels wrong to seek support. Parent counseling can help you deepen your connection, better understand your child's perspective, and create a family environment where everyone feels heard, supported, and understood.
