Adults

Adulthood comes with its own set of challenges. Between relationships, career pressures, life transitions, emotional struggles, and the expectations we place on ourselves, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or disconnected. As you navigate changing circumstances and evolving identities, you may find yourself looking for greater clarity, connection, and a deeper understanding of who we are.

At Relational Creatures, we offer a supportive, judgment-free space where adults can explore their experiences, strengthen their relationships, and develop healthier ways of navigating life’s ups and downs. We specialize in supporting adults experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, loneliness, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and more. Our goal is to help you better understand yourself, build on your strengths, and create meaningful change in your life and relationships.

Common challenges adults face

Adult challenges can take many forms, from anxiety and relationship difficulties to questions of identity, family stress, and major life transitions. Sometimes these struggles emerge during adulthood, while other times, they reflect patterns or experiences that began in childhood or adolescence. Often, stress builds gradually, making it difficult to recognize when we need support.

Making big decisions: Adulthood comes with a steady stream of important decisions, from career changes and relationship commitments to parenting and questions about the future. These choices can feel overwhelming, particularly when you're unsure what you want, feel pressure to make the “right” decision, or worry about how your choices might affect others.

Family stress: Family relationships can be a source of connection and support, but they can also bring up longstanding challenges. You may be navigating unresolved experiences from your family of origin, managing difficult dynamics with parents or siblings, or experiencing stress in your own family or as a parent. These relationships can bring up complicated emotions, especially when old patterns continue to affect your present.

Mental health concerns: Anxiety, depression, and difficulties managing emotions can affect many aspects of adult life, including work, relationships, and your sense of self. You may find yourself caught in cycles of worry, struggling with low mood, or feeling overwhelmed by emotions that are difficult to understand or manage. Over time, these experiences can become increasingly difficult to navigate on your own.

Dating and relationship challenges: Relationships can be complicated at any stage, whether you're navigating dating, considering a long-term commitment, experiencing conflict with a partner, or working through a separation or divorce. You may notice recurring patterns in your relationships, struggle to communicate your needs, or feel disconnected from someone you care about.

Self-esteem and identity concerns: It can be difficult to feel secure in who you are, particularly when you're navigating changing expectations, comparing yourself to others, or questioning whether your life reflects what matters to you. You may struggle with self-doubt, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or a persistent feeling that you're not doing enough. These concerns can affect how you relate to yourself and others, often in ways that are difficult to recognize without support.

Grief and loss: Loss is a part of adulthood, and it can take many forms, from the death of a loved one to the end of a relationship, changes in family life, or the loss of a meaningful role or sense of identity. Grief doesn't always follow a predictable timeline, and you may experience emotions that feel confusing, conflicting, or difficult to share with others.

Beginning therapy with Relational Creatures Psychotherapy is easy and requires no referral. You can book a complimentary consultation call here.

Your initial session will be 75-90 minutes long. During this first appointment, your therapist will ask questions to better understand you and your areas of struggle. This is known as an initial assessment. The assessment phase can last anywhere from 1-3 appointments, and it is critical. It helps the therapist understand your goals and develop a treatment plan to support you in achieving them.

After the assessment is complete, treatment begins!

In the treatment phase, you will be introduced to a variety of skills to practice and implement to better manage your symptoms. Most people will have a therapy session every 1-2 weeks, and we recommend this cadence for optimal treatment. Effective therapy typically takes somewhere between six to twelve appointments (for some more, others less).

Many choose to continue therapy once formal treatment is complete. This is referred to as maintenance. People who do this typically have an appointment once every 6-8 weeks. This is not a requirement and is a matter of personal choice.

Your first appointment will be 75-90 minutes long. Subsequent appointments are generally 1 hour or 90 minutes.

How therapy can improve your well-being

Therapy offers a space to better understand yourself, work through challenges, and develop new ways of navigating life. Whether you're feeling stuck in familiar patterns or adjusting to new circumstances, therapy can help you build the skills and self-awareness to create meaningful change in your life and relationships.

Build confidence, self-esteem, and self-awareness: Develop a deeper understanding of who you are, what matters to you, and what you need. Therapy can help you recognize patterns of self-doubt, challenge your inner critic, and build a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Better understand and manage emotions: Explore the emotions that shape your experiences and relationships, including those that feel overwhelming or difficult to express. Therapy can help you identify emotional patterns, develop effective coping strategies, and respond to challenging situations with greater awareness.

Improve relationships, communication, and boundaries: Gain insight into how you relate to others and recognize patterns that may be contributing to conflict or disconnection. Therapy can help you communicate your needs, establish healthy boundaries, and build more fulfilling relationships.

Navigate life transitions and changing roles: Work through the uncertainty and emotions that can accompany changes in your career, relationships, family, or sense of identity. Therapy can offer support as you adjust to new circumstances, clarify your priorities, and find a path forward that feels more aligned with your values.
